Baby Hat

My friends and I knit hats for the hospital nursery in our town. I
think that each baby should enter the world and be greeted with a
handmade hat. It’s a great way to show you care about your community’s
littlest people.

You will have so much picking out the yarn for your baby hat! Do you
know if the baby is a boy or girl? Will the baby be born in spring,
summer, fall or winter? For spring and summer, try yarn that is soft
and cool. For fall and winter, try yarn that is warm and dreamy.

You will need 1 skein of worsted weight yarn. Cast on 52 stitches.
Knit 4 inches for a hat without a brim. Knit 5 inches if you want to
turn up the bottom and make a brim.
It’s time to make the top of the hat smaller. The tail should be at
the lower left corner of your knitting. In this row, decrease 4
stitches as follows: Knit 4 stitches, knit 2 together, knit 12
stitches, knit 2 together, knit 12 stitches, knit 2 together, knit
12 stitches, knit 2 together, knit 4stitches.
You should now have 48 stitches.
Knit 3 rows.
The tail should be at the lower left corner of your knitting. Repeat
the following for the entire row: Knit 6 stitches, knit 2 together.
You should now have 42 stitches.
Knit 1 row.

You should now have 6 stitches.
Cut your yarn leaving an 18 inch tail.
Thread the tail through the eye of the yarn needle. Run the needle
through the remaining stitches as you take the stitches off the needle.
Pull tight.
It’s time to use the tail to sew up the back seam. Be sure to line
up the seams together and pin them if you want to make sure they match.
After you’re done sewing the seam, don’t forget to check it for holes.
I like to turn the hat inside out and use any extra yarn to mend up
any holes from the inside.
If you’ve made a hat with a brim and don’t want the seam to show at
the very back when you turn it up, here’s what you need to do. When
you are about an inch from the bottom, sew your seam on the inside
instead of the outside so the seam won’t show when it’s rolled up.
Weave in any remaining loose ends.
